Material Exploration, 2015
Working on the Stag artwork got me interested in antlers. Antlers as a workable material and tool have existed longer than bronze or steel, and aesthetics of the material is absolutely stunning. Once adjusted to the penetrating smell of heating and grinding this bone-like material it offered some unique qualities. The most appealing characteristic to work with was how the rough outside texture of the antler appears as a natural sort of rust when working a piece of antler on the lathe. By turning the antler down to the smooth marble-like white on the inside, the last parts visible of the outside texture appear to have eaten into the smooth white surface. The photos show some exploration work making small antler objects: a pen, handlebar ends for a racing bike, and thimbles
